Description |
BBC Profile:
The constituency of Tatton has been held consistently by the Conservatives except between 1997 and 2001 when an independent, former war correspondent Martin Bell, triumphed following allegations of corruption against sitting Tory MP Neil Hamilton. George Osborne retook the seat for the Conservatives in 2001, when Bell did not stand, and the shadow chancellor secured an 11,731 majority in 2005.
At the election, the seat gains the part-ward of Rudheath and South Witton from Weaver Vale, and loses the part-ward of Henbury to Macclesfield. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
In rural Cheshire, south west of Manchester, Tatton is a prosperous constituency comprising the commuter and market towns of Wilmslow, Knutsford and Alderley Edge, as well as more rural settlements.
The single most distinctive feature of the residents of this constituency is their affluence: the numbers of people earning over 80,000 per year is more than twice the national average, and more than a third of households can be categorised as high-income families.
The Alderley Edge part of the constituency has been dubbed "millionaires' village", as it is home to many footballers and TV celebrities. A major employer is the research laboratory of Astra Zeneca.
The constituency contains Styal prison, the largest jail for women outside London.
