Description |
BBC Profile:
Labour has held the seat of St Helens South since 1945. The current Northern Ireland Secretary and former Conservative MP Shaun Woodward has represented the constituency since 2001. In 2005, he retained the seat with a 9,309 majority.
At the election, this seat is formed from three wards from the old Knowsley South seat and seven from the old St Helens South seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This new seat combines the majority of the old St Helens South seat with new wards from neighbouring Knowsley South and the neighbouring town of Whiston. Famous for its successful rugby league team and the giant Pilkington glass factory, there are also a number of other manufacturing industries in the town.
Regeneration is important here. The town has benefited from funding for improvements of the St Helens central station, the canal, and north to the Transco gas depot.
This is rugby league territory. The local club, St Helens, is probably the single most important institution in the town. The club has received planning permission for a major redevelopment of the derelict 46-acre former United Glass site into a 25 million pounds, 18,000-capacity stadium for the Saints and a multi-million pound Tesco Extra. Work should be finished on the development by 2011.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:
Lab 22,820 (55.59%)
LD 11,833 (28.82%)
C 4,977 (12.12%)
