Description BBC Profile:
The Conservatives won this constituency after it was created in 1983 but Labour's Janet Anderson took the seat at the 1992 election. She has held it ever since, securing a 3,676 majority in 2005.

At the 2010 election, the seat gains three part-wards from Blackburn and loses the part-ward of Greenfield to Hyndburn. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This constituency covers the south-east part of Lancashire. It covers the districts of Bacup, Rawtenstall and Darwen as well as part of the districts of Haslingden and Ramsbottom.

Manufacturing is well above the national average for providing jobs in this constituency, although is not as dominant as in other North West seats; distribution, hotels and restaurants are also important.

Tourism has increased slightly in recent years but is a minor sector here.

Darwen Academy recently agreed a 45m investment from the government to improve its facilities. Opened in 2008 on the grounds of the old Darwen Moorland School, it has been completely modernised and caters for 1,600 students. It is one of the few schools in the country to specialise in entrepreneurship.
