Description BBC Profile:
The seat was created in 1983 and Labour's Gordon Prentice took it from the Conservatives in 1992. Prentice retained the seat in 1997, 2001 and 2005, last time around with a 2,180 majority.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Pendle is situated on the east of Lancashire bordering North and West Yorkshire. The area itself has a population of about 90,000 and covers the towns of Nelson and Colne, bordering Burnley to the west.

Pendle is a relatively socially-mixed constituency. As is common among old Lancashire towns, terraced housing covers much of the area, but many of the occupiers in Pendle own their own homes.

Manufacturing is healthy here, employing about a third of the workforce. Many of these jobs are provided by employers such as Rolls-Royce and Silentnight beds.

There is also a small tourist trade in this area, as the beautiful countryside provides an idyllic setting. The famous Pendle witches add a further interest for visitors. This relates back to 1612 and the confessions of Alizon Device. She admitted to being a witch and handed over other names to the towns prosecutors. She and others were tried and hanged in the city of Lancaster in front of huge crowds.
