Description BBC Profile:
Makerfield was created in 1983. Current MP Ian McCartney, who is standing down at the election, won a majority of 18,149 in 2005, with a 0.1% swing to Labour from the Conservatives.

At the election, boundary changes have moved the historic heart of the constituency, Ince-in-Makerfield, into neighbouring Wigan, while the seat has gained wards from Leigh. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Makerfield lies on the strip of land between Liverpool and Manchester. The largest town in the seat is Ashton-in-Makerfield, which sits amid small towns and villages spread across the Lancashire coalfield.

The seat is something of a demographic anomaly with virtually no members of ethnic minorities. The number of one-parent families is well below the national average and the percentage of manual workers is disproportionately high.
