The constituency of Fylde is based on a coastal plain in west Lancashire. It lies on the north bank of the river Ribble and stretches up towards Morecambe Bay. It's best known town is Lytham St Annes, a popular retirement destination, but is also home to market towns Kirkham and Wesham.

Fylde is one of the more affluent constituencies in Lancashire, with about four-fifths of property owner-occupied.

There is a strong manufacturing base which provides jobs for about a quarter of the working population of Fylde. One of the major employers in the constituency is BAE Systems at Warton. The influx of older wealthy people brings in extra money to the local economy - at the 2001 census, 27.6% of the population said they were aged over 60.
