The Conservatives have held the seat of Fylde ever since the seat was created in 1945, with Sir Edward Gardner serving for the shortest period - 17 years. Michael Jack, who has been the MP since 1983, will stand down at the coming election.
At the election, the seat loses the part-wards of Preston Rural East, Preston Rural North and Great Eccleston to Wyre and Preston North, and the part-ward of Ingol to Preston. The constituency of Fylde is based on a coastal plain in west Lancashire. It lies on the north bank of the river Ribble and stretches up towards Morecambe Bay. It's best known town is Lytham St Annes, a popular retirement destination, but is also home to market towns Kirkham and Wesham.

Fylde is one of the more affluent constituencies in Lancashire, with about four-fifths of property owner-occupied.

There is a strong manufacturing base which provides jobs for about a quarter of the working population of Fylde. One of the major employers in the constituency is BAE Systems at Warton. The influx of older wealthy people brings in extra money to the local economy - at the 2001 census, 27.6% of the population said they were aged over 60.
