Description |
BBC Profile:
The Bury South seat was created in 1983 and held by the Conservatives until 1997. Then Labour's Ivan Lewis became MP and has remained so ever since. Mr Lewis received about 50% of the vote in 2005.
At the election, the seat swaps one part-ward with Bury North. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Despite its name, Bury South does not have much to do with the town of Bury, but is instead centred on the working-class town of Radcliffe. It also includes Manchester's affluent northern suburbs, such as Prestwich, which ranks as one of the city's most exclusive residential areas.
Bury South is more urban in character than Bury North. There is not a great deal of social housing and there are few council estates in the constituency.
There have been attempts at economic diversification and the area has a burgeoning reputation as a tourist centre.
Bury was one of the first towns to benefit from the creation of Manchester's MetroLink tram system, introduced in 1990. There are now five stations in the constituency, linking it to the city centre.
The seat has a significant orthodox Jewish community and at the 2001 census, 8.9% of the population identified themselves as Jewish.
