Description BBC Profile:
Burnley was a Labour seat for almost the whole of the 20th Century, only once falling to another party. Peter Pike was MP from 1983 to 2005, when he stood down and was replaced by Kitty Ussher, who was selected on an all-women shortlist. She is standing down at this election.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Burnley is a large Lancashire town situated just east of Blackburn. The constituency, however, is mixed in character because it also includes some of the surrounding Pennine moorland villages.

It has suffered like many other Lancashire towns from the decline of the textile and mining industries, leading to unemployment. Modern-day businesses include high technology, plastics, electronics, manufacturing in aerospace and car components.

Average house prices in Burnley are among the lowest in Lancashire. There is a large Asian community in Burnley, about 7% at the 2001 census, but it is notably smaller than in neighbouring Blackburn.
