Description |
BBC Profile:
Labour has held Ashton under Lyne continuously since 1935. David Heyes has been the MP since 2001, and in 2005 won with a majority of almost 14,000.
At the election, parts of Droylsden East and St Peters wards join from neighbouring Denton and Reddish. Parts of others wards are lost to Oldham West and Royton, Denton and Reddish and Stalybridge and Hyde.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Situated to the east of Manchester, Ashton under Lyne is a post-industrial, urban constituency comprising a chain of built-up valley communities.
It has a strong industrial heritage in textiles and coal-mining, but as these have declined, the area has suffered from high unemployment.
Most of the workers here are still in manual trades, but textile mills and engineering have given way to a wide range of modern industries, including computer technology.
The retail sector has also expanded recently. Ashton Moss Retail Park next to the M60 motorway has attracted a large Ikea store with other firms following, and the site is now expanding its office accommodation, attracting businesses and the public sector relocating from central Manchester. A new Tesco supermarket in Failsworth has also created jobs and led to some knock-on redevelopment of the town.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:
Lab 20,136 (58.48%)
C 6,937 (20.15%)
LD 4,017 (11.67%)
Others 2,621 (7.61 [More...]
