Description BBC Profile:
Yeovil was a staunch Conservative seat from 1918 until 1983, when it was won by Paddy Ashdown.

Former Liberal Democrat leader Ashdown increased his majority of over 11,000. In 2001 Ashdown stepped down, and his successor, David Laws, had his majority reduced to just under 4,000. In 2005 David Laws secured more than 50% of the vote with a majority of 8,562.

Boundary changes here are minimal, but to find out what might have happened had they been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The Somerset constituency of Yeovil covers much more territory than merely the town after which it is named, taking in Chard, Crewkerne, Ilminster, as well as many villages.

The economic core of the constituency is the thriving market town of Yeovil. Its reputation as a centre of the aircraft and defence industries has lived on into the 21st Century. AgustaWestland Helicopters is the biggest employer. The town also boasts strong industrial and commercial sectors, as well as light industry and hi-tech engineering.

Chard is also a base for some engineering and food processing companies, and agriculture, although in decline, still plays an important role in the rural areas outside the towns.
