Description BBC Profile:
This is a new seat. Based on voting patterns in the 2005 general election, Chippenham is a notional win for the Liberal Democrats. However, the three seats from which this new constituency has been formed have all returned a Tory MP for at least the past 50 years.

Chippenham has been created out of parts of Devizes, North Wiltshire, and Westbury constituencies. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

At its northern end, the seat includes Chippenham, which is the largest town in north Wiltshire. The seat comprises three other main towns: Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham and Melksham.

Chippenham is historically a market town based at a crossing of the River Avon, although it has now developed into a commuter town.

Its population has grown rapidly in recent years, with the development of large housing estates (indeed, entirely new suburbs) such as the Cepen Park district to the west of the town, and the Pewsham development to the east.
