Description BBC Profile:
Boundary changes will mean that the seat is very different at the coming election. Nine MPs have represented Bristol North West since 1950, and they have all been members of the winning party in each general election.

The seat was in Tory hands from 1979 to 1997, when Doug Naysmith won a Labour majority of almost 21%. He has held on to the seat since, most recently with a 19% majority over the Conservatives in 2005. In 2007, Mr Naysmith announced he would be stepping down at the next general election.

Boundary changes will see Bristol North West lose all its South Gloucestershire wards to the new seat of Filton and Bradley Stoke, while gaining Stoke Bishop, Henleaze, Westbury-upon-Trym and the remaining parts of Horfield, Lockleaze and Kingsweston from Bristol West. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Bristol has been a maritime city for centuries. The Bristol Port Company's docks are in the west end of the constituency at Avonmouth, and its workforce is more highly skilled and better paid than in the past. Southmead Hospital is another large employer.
