BBC Profile:
The constituency was created in 1997, taking more than half its electors from the old Stamford and Spalding seat. The other 45% of electors were from Grantham, the home town of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
The seat has been held since its creation by Quentin Davies. For many years he represented the Conservative Party but in June 2007 he defected to Labour on the eve of Gordon Brown's coronation as prime minister. He is standing down at this election.

Elsewhere the constituency supports a variety of industries. While the major source of employment used to be engineering, now it is the food industry. Vegetable production and packaging is important in some of the rural areas, as is food-processing. Bourne, the areas third town, has Warners printing works, and the constituency boasts three factories producing women's underwear.
