BBC Profile:
Labour held the seat for most of the post-Second World War period, but it was won by Greg Knight for the Conservatives, in 1983 on a 10% swing.
Bob Laxton took the seat back for Labour at the 1997 general election. At the 2005 election his majority was 3,757 votes.
This election, some wards have been lost to the new Mid Derbyshire seat and Littleover has been gained from Derby South; a few part-wards have also been moved between the North and South divisions. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The aerospace and rail industries dominate the labour market. Although manufacturing accounts for an above average number of employees, higher proportions work in finance, IT, public administration, education and health.
