Created out of two towns, Welwyn and Hatfield, the constituency contains the New Town and Garden City as well as Brookmans Park.
The pharmaceutical sector is now the major industry here, with many large firms such as Roche, GlaxoSmithKline and Schering Plough situated in Welwyn Garden City. Hi-tech firms such as T-Mobile and ComputaCentre have also moved to the constituency and there is a growing number of warehouses that rely on the constituency's good transport and communication links.
The area previously occupied by British Aerospace was redeveloped and used as the campus for the University of Hertfordshire, which has become one of the region's largest employers, with over 2,500 staff.
