Description BBC Profile:
In 1997 Labour's Melanie Johnson took the seat from the Conservatives with a majority of 5,595 on an 11% swing. She held the seat in 2001, but with a majority of just 1,196 votes.

In 2005 Johnson was defeated by Grant Shapps, for the Conservatives, who took the seat with an 8% swing and a majority of 5,946 votes.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Created out of two towns, Welwyn and Hatfield, the constituency contains the New Town and Garden City as well as Brookmans Park.

The pharmaceutical sector is now the major industry here, with many large firms such as Roche, GlaxoSmithKline and Schering Plough situated in Welwyn Garden City. Hi-tech firms such as T-Mobile and ComputaCentre have also moved to the constituency and there is a growing number of warehouses that rely on the constituency's good transport and communication links.

The area previously occupied by British Aerospace was redeveloped and used as the campus for the University of Hertfordshire, which has become one of the region's largest employers, with over 2,500 staff.
