Description BBC Profile:
John Selwyn Gummer, who had previously held the Eye seat (under a previous boundary change) since 1979, was elected as MP for the new constituency with 58% of the vote in the 1983 general election. Gummer's position held firm in the 1987 and 1992 elections.

At the 1997 general election Gummer had his majority cut from a notional 16,700 to just 3,254, but his majority increased in 2001, and in 2005 was back to just under five figures.

At the election, Suffolk Coastal gains one part-ward from Waveney and loses two part-wards. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Suffolk Coastal covers almost the whole of Suffolk's sea frontage, apart from the area around Lowestoft, which is in Waveney.

The areas economy is largely divided between tourism and industry. Felixstowe, the biggest container port in the UK, is the largest employer.

There are sizeable industrial developments in Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Leiston, the nearest settlement to the Sizewell nuclear power plant. Adnams has a nationally renowned brewery in Southwold.
