The Conservatives have held this region of Suffolk since 1951. Sir James Harrison served the area for 28 years between 1951 and 1979, when it formed the western part of the then Eye division.
Sir Michael Lord has held the current seat since its formation in 1983, recording a majority of 18,006 in 1992.
In 2005 he was returned with a majority of 7,856.
At the election, Central Suffolk and North Ipswich loses the part-ward of Stowupland to Bury St Edmunds and three other part-wards to Ipswich. It also gains Whitton and Kesgrave East as two part-wards. The most rural of the Suffolk constituencies, with over two thirds of the population living in villages and rural areas, Central Suffolk and North Ipswich is a largely prosperous region of golden cornfields, commuter homes and picturesque retirement residences.
Apart from the northernmost suburbs of Ipswich, most of this seat is covered by undulating, unspoilt farmland. The economic pursuits are mainly agricultural, and associated industries can be found in the towns of the region, such as Framlingham, Wickham Market and, just outside the constituency, Needham Market.
There are a number of historical sites here, including many important medieval churches and Framlingham castle, where Mary Tudor sought refuge in 1553 during the nine-day reign of Lady Jane Gre [More...]
