Description BBC Profile:
Current Labour MP Barbara Follett won the Stevenage seat in 1997, displacing Conservative Tim Wood with 55.3% of the vote: enough to give her a majority of 11,582 votes. In 2005 her majority was cut to 3,139 votes after a 6.9% swing to the Conservatives.

At the election, boundary changes are minimal. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This Hertfordshire constituency is based around the town of Stevenage, which was Britain's first post-Second World War new town, with some notable examples of modern architecture.

Companies in the constituency include Fujitsu Services, GlaxoSmithKline, DuPont and the Dynamics Division of BAE Systems, although the latter has cut the number of jobs in the past decade. Financial and business services comprise the largest share of total business in Stevenage.

Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles are the largest category of employment, accounting for a fifth of economic activity.

The town has good transport links: it is situated on the main railway line going north from King's Cross, and on the A1(M).
