Luton North was a Conservative seat until 1997, when current MP Kelvin Hopkins won it for Labour with a majority of 9,626 over the Conservatives. In 2005 his majority fell below 6,500.

At the election boundary changes are minimal, but mean that the seat loses the part ward of Biscot to Luton South, and gains the rest of Barnfield and Saints wards. This Bedfordshire constituency has become very much an urban, residential seat having lost its former rural fringe to Mid Bedfordshire in 1995 and some of Luton's town area to Luton South with the recent boundary changes.

This constituency has less industry than its neighbour, Luton South, but includes the area's most up-market residential housing. It excludes the town centre but does include the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, the Luton Sixth Form College and the main campus of Barnfield College of Further Education within its boundaries. Service industries are the growth areas providing most of the employment opportunities today.

The local economy is aided by excellent transport and communication links. The M1 runs across the west of the seat and the Thameslink rail service runs commuters directly into London. Its location between Oxford and Cambridge on the west/east axis and between Birmingham and London north/south, is ideal for national and international investo
