Description

BBC Profile:
The seat bears no close resemblance to any of the existing constituencies. None of the parliamentary candidates for the new seat is a sitting MP. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This new seat is centred on the town of Witham in Essex. Outside the one main town it covers a largely rural area of mid-Essex bordering on the larger towns of Colchester, Braintree and Maldon.

It is made up of wards from Colchester, Braintree and Maldon district councils and covers an area previously split between Braintree, North Essex, Colchester, and Maldon and East Chelmsford constituencies.

This is a largely prosperous area, although with some wide variations between town and country.

Witham is home to several industrial estates, and the small town of Tiptree is famous for jam-making. Agriculture and tourism are important, with some marine and sailing activity in settlements on the Blackwater estuary.

Coggeshall was a well-known antiques centre, but that business is declining.
