Description |
BBC Profile:
Formerly held by Virginia Bottomley (Health Secretary in John Major's government), this seat and its predecessor has elected only Conservative MPs since World War II. 1997 saw the Conservative majority fall from 14,975 to 2,694, and then down to just 861 votes in 2001.
Mrs Bottomley stood down in 2005 and the Conservatives selected local man Jeremy Hunt as her replacement, who won the seat and built the majority to 5,711.
At the election, the seat gains the part-ward of Bramley, Busbridge and Hascombe from Guildford, in exchange for the part-ward of Alford, Cranleigh Rural and Ellen's Green. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Lying on the Sussex and Hampshire borders, South West Surrey combines open countryside and residential areas. The main towns are Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere, set in woodland and fields; local landmarks include the Devil's Punchbowl and Frensham Ponds.
Farnham is the largest town and has a population of around 37,000. It is an historic and architecturally important old market town with a conservation area covering the town centre.
Historically, the main industries in the area were paper, leather, wool and cloth. However, it is now a base for commuters to London. Key employment sectors are finance services, distribution, hospitality, public administration, education and health.
