The seat was held during the 1980s by the Conservative MP Tim Renton. In 1997 he was replaced by current Tory MP Nicholas Soames, Winston Churchill's grandson, who secured a majority of 6,854.

The constituency of Mid Sussex is dominated by three towns: East Grinstead in the north, Haywards Heath in the centre and Burgess Hill in the south. The seat also contains a few small villages set in the countryside, including the High Weald.
Mid Sussex has a healthy and vibrant economy. There are over 3,000 local businesses. The service sector accounts for around 70% of employment, with around a third of people in managerial positions. Many of Mid Sussex's residents commute each day to London, Brighton, Crawley or Gatwick, especially from Haywards Heath.
The three major towns in Mid Sussex have their own particular economic features. Burgess Hill is an important office and manufacturing centre, particularly well known for its high-tech telecommunication and pharmaceutical companies. The creation of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS trust led to certain health services being moved from the Princess Royal hospital at Haywards Heath to Brighton.
