Term End due to resignation after switching parties and forcing a by-election
BBC Profile:
This newly-created constituency takes in much of the now abolished Harwich seat, but without the town of Harwich itself. Some additional wards have been gained from the abolished North Essex seat. The maritime seat includes the town of the same name.
From 1945 to 1997 the old seat of Harwich returned three MPs: Sir Stanley Holmes (Liberal), Sir Julian Ridsdale (Liberal/Conservative) and Iain Sproat (Conservative), all of whom regularly took over 50% of the vote.
In 1997 a local candidate, Ivan Henderson, a former docker and RMT union official, won the seat for Labour by 1,216 votes. In 2001 Henderson increased his majority to 2,596. However, in 2005 support for Labour fell by 5.3%. This, coupled with almost a 2% increase in the Tory vote, was enough to give the new Conservative candidate Douglas Carswell victory with a majority of just under 1,000.

One component of the project is Clacton and the coastal towns, and although there have been improvements [More...]

This constituency occupies the easternmost coastal segment of north Essex, but excludes the port of Harwich to the north. Seaside resorts are strung down the coastline. There is a rural hinterland to the west, but the bulk of the population is coastal.
