Description |
BBC Profile:
The seat is newly created, largely from the old constituency of West Chelmsford.
The area has been held by the Conservatives since 1950. Norman St John-Stevas was the MP from 1964 to 1987, when he was succeeded by Simon Burns, who had a majority of 9,620 votes in 2005.
Boundary changes see some wards moved to Saffron Walden, and areas gained from the former Maldon and East Chelmsford seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The constituency contains the whole of the urban area of Chelmsford Borough.
Chelmsford is a prosperous retail, administrative and manufacturing centre. It is the county town of Essex and includes the headquarters of the district council and Essex County Council, along with those of Essex Police and the area's crown court. It is also the home of the county cricket team and Anglia Ruskin University. The council has developed an ambitious town centre area action plan for further development.
Major categories of employment in Chelmsford borough are service industries, with a significant manufacturing and financial services element.
