The resettlement of many London families in this corner of south-east Essex resulted in rapid population growth during the post-Second World War era, and in 1955 Castle Point was designated as a seat in its own right. Until 1992, it was represented by the Conservative Sir Bernard Braine. On his retirement his successor Robert Spink secured a majority of over 19,200, and although in 1992 the seat showed signs of a shift away from the Conservatives with a swing of just under 5% to Labour, Dr Spink still enjoyed a majority of over 16,800.
In 1997 however, Castle Point was witness to one of the biggest swings against a sitting MP, with a 17% swing to Labour that allowed Christine Butler into parliament with a majority of 1,143.
Spink reclaimed the seat for the Conservatives in 2001 with a majority of 985, and increased that to more than 8,000 in 2005.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
Situated on the coastline of southeast Essex on the Thames estuary, this seat takes its name from two of the most prominent landmarks in the constituency, Hadleigh Castle and Canvey Point.
Outside the four main settlements - Benfleet, Canvey Island, Hadleigh and Thundersley - the metropolitan green belt covers around 85% of the seat.
Castle Point is a largely residential constituency from which many commute to work elsewhere. It has a high level of home ownership.
