Description
BBC Profile:
The seat was represented by the Conservative Sir Robert McCrindle from the creation of the seat in 1974 until his retirement in 1992.

He was succeeded by current MP Eric Pickles, the Conservative Party Chairman, who fought off a challenge to his re-election in 2001 from the independent Martin Bell, following allegations that the Peniel Pentecostal Church had taken over the local Conservative Party.

At the 2005 election, Mr Pickles increased his majority from 2,821 votes to over 11,000 with over 50% of the vote.

At the election, boundary changes are minimal with one ward added from Epping Forest and part of one ward moved into Harlow. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Just outside Greater London, in a relatively rural corner of Essex, the seat takes its name from Brentwood, the largest town in the area, and the small town of Chipping Ongar to the north of the constituency.

The constituency also encompasses the town of Ingatestone to the east, as well as a number of small and picturesque villages dotted along the northern boundary.

The Ford Motor Company has a large headquarters in the constituency. Over 50% of the borough's population commute, mostly to London. In 2006/07 60.3% were employed in the top three groups of managers and professionals compared with a national average of 42.7%.
