Description |
BBC Profile:
This constituency has been Labour since 1935. A swing of 2.78% towards the Liberal Democrats meant that the results from the 2005 election differed only marginally from 2001. David Miliband was re-elected with a slightly reduced majority of 12,312.
At the election, boundary changes see Biddick and All Saints, Simonside and Rekendyke, and Whitburn and Marsden wards completely within the constituency, rather than shared with Jarrow, as previously. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The seaside town of South Shields, north of Jarrow, has problems associated with the decline of traditional local industries.
All the coal mines have closed and ships are no longer built here, but the Tyne is still busy with ship repairs and offshore oil platforms. Light engineering and electronic companies have also replaced some of the heavy industry.
The constituency's centre is the town of South Shields, a working-class port. The town has been home to several industries. Traditionally it relied heavily on the coal and ship-building industries. However, as they have declined South Shields has turned to other sectors - especially the service sector which now predominates. Employment is heavily orientated towards manufacturing.

LD 6,161 (19.18%)
