Labour has won West Bromwich East since its creation in 1974. The seat was won by Tom Watson at the 2005 general election with 55.6% of vote and an 11,652 majority. It was one of only a handful of seats nationally to register a swing towards Labour.

West Bromwich is a populous area of the Black Country between Wednesbury and the Birmingham district of Handsworth.
No replacement has yet been found for manufacturing as the dominant employment sector.
As in many parts of the West Midlands, economic restructuring away from manufacturing favours services and retail.
