Description |
BBC Profile:
Stratford has elected Conservative MPs for many decades. Alan Howarth, who held the seat since 1983, defected to Labour in 1995. He was replaced as MP by the current member, John Maples, at the 1997 general election.
Boundary changes mean the new seat is very similar in make-up to its predecessor. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford-on-Avon as a constituency is spread over the southern half of Warwickshire. The historical connections of the town and natural beauty of the countryside draw millions of visitors each year.
With the exception of the town which gives the constituency its name, the seat is largely rural. Stratford is an economically prosperous area.
The seat has a higher than average proportion of professional and management workers, with many of them commuting to nearby Birmingham and Coventry.
The most important local sector is tourism, with over 3 million visitors every year bringing in over 100 million pounds to the local economy.
Big employers in the town of Stratford include the headquarters of NFU Mutual Insurance, Intrum Justitia, a debt recovery company and the telemarketing firm Sitel.
