Description
BBC Profile:
The seat was held for the Conservatives between 1945 and 1997 by two MPs, Hugh Fraser and Bill Cash.

Following boundary changes, Cash decided to stand for the new Stone constituency instead. Stafford was taken by Labour's David Kidney with a swing of 10.8% and a majority of 4,314 votes.

Boundary changes only exchange two rural and village wards each way with the Stone constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This constituency is situated to the north of the West Midlands conurbation in central Staffordshire. It consists of the county town of Stafford, with a population of around 42,000, and a ring of surrounding countryside.

This is a mixed, semi-rural constituency. Stafford is an ancient town ringed by a new road system.

Stafford's economic development historically came from its status as a railway town (it is still an important junction) but it is now the commercial and administrative centre for the county and economic activity is more varied. The services sector is the biggest employer.

In recent years there has been widespread expansion of retail and commercial warehouses around the Beaconside area of Stafford, making the most of the connections of the nearby M6 motorway. The Staffordshire University campus has grown in size here.
