Description

BBC Profile:
The late John Biffen (a former Conservative cabinet minister) sat for North Shropshire from 1961 until 1997, when he was succeeded by current Conservative MP Owen Paterson.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Stretching across the entire width of Shropshire, this seat borders Stone in Staffordshire to the east, Eddisbury in Cheshire to the north, Clywd South to the west and Shrewsbury to the south.

The district of North Shropshire consists of a chunk of rural countryside speckled with small towns and villages. Punctuated by green pastures, ancient woodlands and sandstone hills, the area has been dubbed one of England's only three remaining rural idylls by the Council for the Protection of Rural England.

The market towns of Oswestry and Market Drayton are the seat's major communities and account for well over a third of its population. Other towns include Wem and Whitchurch.

The seat contains some former mining communities but agriculture, tourism and light industry make up the largest sectors of the economy here; many of the constituency's firms are family-owned and relatively small.
