Description

BBC Profile:
Paul Marsden won the seat for Labour in 1997 and held it in 2001, but when he stood down at the 2005 general election the seat was won by Conservative candidate Daniel Kawczynski, with a 1,808-vote majority.

There will be no boundary changes to this seat at the next election.

The seat is co-terminus with the eponymous former borough council and consists of the county town of Shrewsbury and a substantial chunk of surrounding Shropshire countryside.

Nestled in a great loop of the river Severn, Shrewsbury is a medieval town with a wealth of 15th century black-and-white Tudor houses and narrow cobbled streets. However, the town also has a few wards in the top quarter of the most deprived in England, including Castlefields and Ditherington.

The services sector, manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture are all important to the economy here. In addition the borough council, the county council and the health authority are based in Shrewsbury and provide a great deal of employment.
