| Description |
Appointment by President Medvedev and confirmed by the republic's State Council. Under new rules proposed by Medvedev, the appointment process began with the State Council rather than the Kremlin when the legislature selected three potential nominees for him to choose from. The three nominees are Prime Minister Rustam Minnikhanov, Speaker of the State Council Farid Mukhametshin, and incumbent President Shaimiev. Shaimiev asked Medvedev not to reappoint him January 25.
