Description
BBC Profile:
The southern Cardiff seat has been held by Labour since 1945 and in that time has only had two MPs. Former Prime Minister James Callaghan was MP here from 1945 to 1987, when it was called Cardiff South East. He was followed by Alun Michael, who in addition to being an MP was an Assembly Member between 1999 and 2000. He was First Secretary of the National Assembly until he resigned in February 2000.

An increase in the Lib Dem vote in the 2005 general election meant Michael's majority was reduced to 9,237.

At this election, the addition of the Sully ward in Vale of Glamorgan to the seat is part of minor changes. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Straddling Cardiff Bay and council boundaries, this seat includes the area around the National Assembly for Wales and the pretty Victorian seaside resort of Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The regeneration of south Cardiff has led to an influx of largely young, middle class residents. Many of these have moved into new upmarket accommodation around Cardiff Bay.

The Cardiff wards are still notably poorer than those in Vale of Glamorgan. The beautiful Vale of Glamorgan provides a real change of scenery from the city and Penarth's tourism potential will be increased by the continuing growth of the Cardiff economy. The Vale offers plenty of activities and caters for a diverse cross-section of tastes
