Well, that'd prove the 15th century is back in style.

I couldn't blame them if they went with someone who was reliable but didn't exactly have a long record, just to lower the odds of certain things being revealed down the road. Which is another reason why the Americans won't get the nod.

I'd be kind of happy if Marc Ouellet got it, I'm not Catholic, but it would be nice to have a non-European pope.

We have to rule out Dolan since America will never have a Pope.

I'm rooting for Ouellet as I'm concerned Turkson/Arinze are too extreme.

I'm qualified to endorse since I was baptized Catholic lol.

Isn't Ouellet considered a rather right-wing figure as well?

Well, if any institution is going to be rock-solid conservative, it's going to be leadership of the Catholic Church.

My dad is a catholic. He's really into this nonsense. It's kind of funny, actually.

My prediction, with no real knowledge about the workings of the Catholic faith beyond what my lapsed parents remember:

I think the next Pope's going to be an easily-manipulated and inoffensive manager who will exist for the sole purpose of allowing the Church to do their best to handle kiddie-rape accusations without having someone directly linked to it all running their faith.

Honestly, being Protestant I couldn't care less.

But since the topic is big in the news. I would surprised if the next pope is black. Although these two candidates seem very conservative, I think there is still some Catholics in some of the Whiter nations that might still have some "old-fashioned" feelings and might be outraged.

The College of Cardinals will elect a black Pope the day I become a six-foot tall Russian supermodel named Natalya.

God help us all if Timothy Dolan is elected Pope. At least European Popes have a feeling of being distant and not really relevant to US life, but if there is an American Pope (which I highly doubt there ever will be one). I pray it isn't him.

At least they're not seriously considering Raymond Burke. So that's a positive

Aside from obvious issues concerning the sexual abuse of children, I hope Timothy Dolan doesn't become Pope if for no other reason than the fact that my crazy drunk uncle used to be fairly close to him during his time as Archbishop of Milwaukee. I wish to continue living a life free of chance social connections to the f*cking Pope.

I think Turkson's apparent love of media attention and tendency to say the wrong thing has pretty much killed his candidacy.

To me the only thing that is certain is that the choice will be "younger" which in Vatican years means about 65-72. They usually pick a Pope somehow different from his predecessor and to me that is the most obvious difference they will seek out after a decade of aged and generally infirm leadership.

American Catholics think the next pope should:

Allow priests to marry: 62-30
Allow female priests: 62-27
Relax contraception ban: 64-28
Do more to combat sexual abuse by priests: 81-13

I suppose the 13% no on the last question are the priests themselves, nuns, seminarians, and Bill Donohue.
