Most votes received by candidates for party vice presidential nomination, up to the point where a nominee was determined. |
| Description |
The vice presidential ballot was taken on the final day of the 16th Democratic National Convention. Each state was called upon to place a name in nomination, and the following men were so nominated: former Gov. Isaac P. Gray IN, Adlai E. Stevenson IL, Chief Justice Allen B. Morse MI, and U.S. Rep. John L. Mitchell WI. In a nomination speech, Stevenson’s record as the assistant postmaster general during Cleveland’s first term was held up as an indication that he was aware of the significance of party patronage positions. Stevenson led on the first ballot, after which Iowa precipitated a series of shifts which gave him the nomination.
