The 12th Republican National Convention assembled in the Coliseum, Chicago IL. The states were granted 994 delegate votes: two per electoral vote and 2 to 6 per territory.
As with the 1900 Republican National Convention, the largest question facing the convention was the selection of a VP nominee. Although no VP who succeeded to the presidency ever managed to get renominated, TR faced no real opposition.
Portions of the delegations of 13 states were challenged before the convention, but the credentials committee managed to dispense with all but two serious cases involving part of the Missouri delegation and the entire Louisiana delegation. It made recommendations on those two delegations which were accepted without opposition in the convention.
A major debate took place on whether to grant the Hawaii delegation 2 or 6 delegates. Although the issue was rather meaningless for the present convention, it voted 495-490 to give Hawaii the 6 delegates (the same as the states with a single U.S. Representative - ID, UT, WY, etc.).
President Roosevelt was unanimously re-nominated, and Charles W. Fairbanks (IN) was unanimously nominated for the vacant vice presidency.
1st Ballot - President
--Theodore Roosevelt (NY) 994
Temporary Chairman: Elihu Root (NY)
Permanent Chairman: Joseph G. Cannon (IL)
