Description |
BBC Profile:
North Herefordshire has elected a Conservative MP continuously since 1906. The seat was was held by Peter Temple-Morris from 1974 to 2001. He stood down after losing the Conservative Party whip, and crossing the floor to join the Labour benches.
The current MP Bill Wiggin took the seat in 2005.
The new seat of North Herefordshire lies entirely within Herefordshire unitary authority. North Herefordshire is largely equivalent to the previous Leominster constituency, but without its previous wards in Worcestershire. It is therefore solely made up of the northern half of the county of Herefordshire. It remains one of the largest constituencies in England. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The seat comprises the market towns of Leominster, Kington, Bromyard and Ledbury, as well as great swathes of surrounding countryside. Leominster is the largest town, with a population of about 10,000.
The town contains the constituency's only real industry. Specialities include the wool trade and the export of the famous Hereford breed of cattle.
