Description BBC Profile:
Coventry South was created from the amalgamation of wards from Coventry South West and South East in 1997.

Jim Cunningham took the seat for Labour with a majority of nearly 11,000, and has retained it since, with majority of 6,255 in 2005.

At the election, the boundary reconfiguration sees parts of Earlsdon and Westwood formerly in Coventry North West and parts of Binley and Willenhall and St Michael's previously in Coventry North East brought inside Coventry South's boundaries. The inclusion of all of Binley and Willenhall neatens and extends Coventry South's north-western boundary. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

One of three seats in the city, Coventry South covers a mixture of working class and middle class residential areas.

Wainbody and Earlsdon contain some of the most affluent areas in Coventry and include suburban family houses, the King Henry VIII School and Warwick University. However, the constituency also covers traditionally working class areas such as Binley and Willenhall.

Large numbers work in education and manufacturing, although the dented and declining motor industry has affected jobs here as in other regional constituencies.
