Description |
BBC Profile:
Coventry North East occupies very similar boundaries to the former Coventry East constituency, represented by Labour's Richard Crossman between 1945 and 1974. Bob Ainsworth, a former Jaguar sheet metal worker and city councillor, has represented the constituency since 1992. At the 1997 general election, Ainsworth secured a 13% swing from the Tories.
At the election the new constituency boundaries see four wards within Coventry North East bulked out with part-wards moved into the constituency from elsewhere. Three of these - Foleshill, Lower Stoke, and Wyken - had previously been shared with Coventry South while the fourth, Longford, was shared with Coventry North West. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Coventry North East covers most of the east side of the city. It is largely working-class and industrial. Reflecting the historic importance of manufacturing in the local economy, the constituency contains an above-average proportion of partly-skilled and non-skilled manual workers.
Both Warwick and Coventry universities, situated in Coventry South, contribute to the local economy. The employment market has diversified in recent years, with the introduction of pharmaceutical and telecommunications companies. The Walsgrave regional hospital site is in this constituency.
