Description BBC Profile:
Sir Ivan Lawrence held the seat for the Conservatives from 1974 to 1997. In 1983 he won with a majority of 11,647 votes. Janet Dean won the seat for Labour in 1997 with a majority of 6,330, and has held the seat since.

Minimal boundary changes will affect the seat at the election. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Situated along the eastern edge of Staffordshire, Burton comprises the towns of Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter and a considerable amount of the surrounding countryside.

Burton is a predominantly working-class seat that straddles the urban-rural divide.

Many rural areas like Stretton and Stapenhill are marked by substantial prosperity.

The local economy has a high proportion of manual work. Burton itself has strong associations with the brewing industry, the town having five brewers, including Marston and Coors (which produces Carling and Worthington) and is also home to the production of Marmite. The nearby village of Rocester is the base of JCB, who are a major local employer.
