Description The Democrats were not optimistic about winning the presidential election of 1992 at the beginning of the year. In the Iowa caucuses, Sen. Harkin won his home state overwhelmingly. The race then swung to New Hampshire, where former Sen. Tsongas won the primary with 33% of the vote, followed by Gov. Clinton with 25%. None of the other candidates broke the 10% mark.

On 3/3/1992, three states voted. Clinton won Georgia, Tsongas won Maryland, and Gov. Brown won Colorado. These three contenders each won another primary before Super Tuesday.

On Super Tuesday, eleven states voted. Clinton won eight states to three for Tsongas. For the first time in the race, one of the Democratic contenders clearly had momentum. Clinton then won a streak of primaries in the North.

Tsongas withdrew from the race, but he briefly re-entered after New York's voters gave him 29% of their votes. His second place finish in New York was impressive, but by this time Clinton was too far ahead in delegates to catch.
