Description |
Candidates not surpassing 5% of votes in a round are eliminated while others advance to the next round until a candidate has earned a majority of parliamentary support to become the next speaker. Votes in this container will represent the highest number of votes received by each candidate on any ballot, with individual ballots listed below.
First ballot:
1. John Bercow - 179
2. Sir George Young - 112
3. Margarett Beckett - 74
4. Alan Haselhurst - 66
5. Sir Alan Beith - 55
6. Ann Widdecombe - 44
7. Parmjit Dhanda - 26 - ELIMINATED
8. Richard Shepherd - 15 - ELIMINATED
9. Sir Patrick Cormack - 13 - ELIMINATED
10. Sir Michael Lord - 9 - ELIMINATED
Second ballot:
1. John Bercow - 221
2. Sir George Young - 174
3. Margaret Beckett - 70 - WITHDRAWN
4. Alan Haselhurst - 57 - WITHDRAWN
5. Sir Alan Beith - 46 - WITHDRAWN
6. Ann Widdecombe - 30 - ELIMINATED
No candidate received less than 5% of the vote in the second round but as the candidate with the lowest support Ann Widdecombe was eliminated. The other candidates outside Bercow and Young withdrew so the third ballot will likely elect the next speaker.
Third ballot:
1. John Bercow - 322 - ELECTED
2. Sir George Young - 271
