Description BBC Profile:
This constituency was formed from Birmingham Aston and Sutton Coldfield in 1974 and has been Labour's ever since. Robin Corbett inherited the seat from Julius Silverman in 1983 with a majority of 231 votes, rising to 12,657 votes in 1997. Sion Simon, Corbett's replacement, won the seat in 2001.

At the election, boundary changes will see Erdington and Tyburn both brought fully within this seat, along with Kingstanding, giving the constituency marginally extended northern borders. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

A working-class constituency situated to the north-east of Birmingham city centre, this is an inner-city seat.

The local economy was hard-hit by the closure of the MG Rover plant in April 2005. A large proportion of the workforce is engaged in manual labour and the professional and managerial sectors are under-represented.

Recent health sector boosts for Birmingham Erdington have included the regeneration and creation of community and health facilities at The Sanctuary, Eden Court Medical Practice as part of the massive 1993-2005 Castle Vale estate Housing Action Trust regeneration project.

There were over 40 schools within the constituency by 2007, including six specialist schools.
