Description |
BBC Profile:
This constituency has been held by Labour since Karen Buck was elected in 1997 with a majority of almost 15,000. Buck's majority has since declined owing to boundary changes, falling turnout and Conservative and Liberal Democrat gains in 2001 and 2005.
This new constituency is largely composed of the old Regents Park and Kensington North seat, with part of the Bayswater ward from the Cities of London and Westminster. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
In the east of the constituency is St Johns Wood, one of the most affluent areas in London. The areas north of Notting Hill Gate on either side of Ladbroke Grove, beyond the relatively small number of expensive houses and flats, are mostly made up of housing estates like Mozart and Lisson Green.
There are hardly any employers beyond shops and public services. Most people work in central London and the economy is heavily dependent on the West End and the City.
In matters of education, a very high proportion of wealthy parents send their children to private schools, and there is a high cross-constituency flow during the school run. There are relatively few comprehensive schools and a high proportion of church schools.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:
Lab 12,823 (39.88%)
C 10,703 (33.28%)
LD 6,322 (19.66%)
Green 1,523 (4.74%)
Others 409 (1.27%)
UKIP 376 (1.17%)
