It was a four-way race in 1981.
Get your facts straight.

Thank you for your input, but do you actually have anything useful to contribute, like the names and vote totals of the missing candidates or a reference link? I've also seen it said that there were 6 people in the race. But have yet to find the details.

It doesn't help much with totals, but unofficial early totals from The Montreal Gazette give Sanders 4,045, Paquette 4,023, and said Richard Bove and Joseph McGrath received about 1,200 votes between them. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19810305&id=GYoxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=vKQFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1225,1542505&hl=en
Will try and find more info.

Not sure if the final totals here are correct. Looks like from the City of Burlington's official election register, the results are Bernie 4,030, Paquette 4,020, Richard Bove 1,091 and Joe McGrath 139. http://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/its-nine-or-never/Content?oid=2131890

There's an alternate timeline wherein write-in candidate Gordon Paquette didn't lose to Bernie by ten votes, became the mayor, and went on to be a major figure in American domestic politics.
He wasn’t a write-in, he was the incumbent who lost.
