| Description |
This election is seen as a major test for PRI Gov. Enrique Peña, who is widely seen as the favourite to win his party's 2012 presidential nomination. Should the PRI extend its plurality in the nation's largest state legislature Peña will be strengthened and it is unlikely any other PRI candidate will be able to challenge him for the presidential nomination, but if the party's fortunes suffer he is seen as potentially vulnerable.
