Description
BBC Profile:
Having been Inverness, Nairn and Lochaber since 1983, the constituency was represented in both elections until the boundaries were redrawn in 1997 by the Liberal, and then Liberal Democrat, MP Sir David Russell Johnston (later Lord Russell-Johnston). In 1992 Johnston held on with just 458 votes but following his retirement in 1997 the Liberal Democrats were pushed into third place. Labour's David Stewart won with a majority of 2,339. Lochaber voters were placed with Ross and Skye.

In 2005 the Liberal Democrats won this new seat quite convincingly from Labour. Danny Alexander achieved a majority of 4,148.
