Description
The American Party in the GHWB Administration

The American Party began the long process of collapse during the Bush administration. Local state affiliates moved from inactive to defunct one by one. In 1990, the party offered a candidate for U.S. Senate in SC and two candidates for U.S. House in UT, but otherwise the party ceased to exist throughout the South and in Delaware. To complicate matters, a sizable portion of party leaders defected in 1990 to form a "Christian Party" which did not flourish, either. Another bad sign for the party was the timing of the 1992 national convention, well inside the window for collecting signatures for ballot access rather than in the previous year.

The 5th American Party National Convention

The party's fifth national convention was held in Pensacola FL in 6/1992. The delegates nominated Robert J. Smith for president. Smith had been active with the Independent American Party in Utah, having run for the U.S. Senate in 1988 and U.S. House in 1990. The vice presidential nominee was Doris Feimer of North Dakota.

The Campaign of 1992

Due to the lateness of the national convention, the presidential campaign was difficult. Smith was able to gain access in his home state of Utah, where he won 292 votes. The party sponsored candidates for the U.S. Senate in NV and SC and a candidate for U.S. House in SC.
