The American Party in the second Reagan Administration
The American Party continued its healing during the second Reagan administration. Dennis played a major role in strengthening of the party, but the active members were becoming gradually more centered in the Rocky Mountain states rather than in the South. In the 1986 midterm elections, the party offered candidates for the U.S. Senate in IN and SC and candidates for the U.S. House in DE, KY, and SC.
The 4th American Party National Convention
The party's fourth national convention was held in Salt Lake City UT on 6/27/1987. The party was greatly satisfied with Dennis's campaign in 1984 and nominated him for a second presidential campaign. The delegates chose Earl Jeppson of Utah as the candidate for Vice President.
The Campaign of 1988
Dennis made a second attempt to widen the base of the American Party. He recruited a candidate for the U.S. House in New Hampshire, the first time the party had been represented on the ballot there since the 1976 division. The party offered one candidate for the U.S. Senate in Utah but only two candidates for the U.S. House - New Hampshire and Utah. Dennis only appeared on the ballot in Minnesota and Utah, and his total vote dropped to just 3,475.
